Red Dog's has been a beach icon since 1975, when Charlie Maultsby and Steve Parker (a.k.a. Red Dog) opened the doors. Parker got out in 1981 leaving Charlie the sole owner of the business. Thirty years later, Charlie is still owner and very active in making Red Dog's as great as it can be. There have been a lot of changes over the years. For instance, in 1981 there was a contest to see who could come up with a new name for the bar. The winner was Sgodders (Reddogs backwards for you morons). Charlie kept the name for a couple of years and then changed it back.

For whatever reason, Red Dog's has always been a controversial issue in the town of Wrightsville Beach. In 1995, Red Dog's was shut down. Everyone thought that was the end of an era, until our good friend Reggie Barnes (Eastern Skate & Supply Co.) bought the building after hurricane Fran in September of 1996. After a bit of a struggle, we reopened ten months after the shut down. and everyone was happy to have "The Dog Pound" back. Over the next three and a half years, we battled with the town officials to open a second floor bar. Once again Red Dogs prevailed and opened upstairs in 2001 with just a beer license.  It took another year to get it straight, but in 2002 we got our liquor license upstairs. That makes us 3-0 against the tyranny of the Wrightsville Beach old money.

The season of 2004 was one of the best ever with the largest crowds, off the hook parties and our 2nd annual Red Dog's / Rusty Surf Contest. We'd like to thank all of you who come out to Red Dog's, especially our loyal regulars who keep us going strong through the off-season. Whatever reason you come to Red Dog's, whether dancing, pounding fishbowls, see a band or just hanging with friends analyzing surf flicks, we sincerely hope everyone has a great time. Your comments and suggestions are always welcomed. I look forward to slinging drinks your way for many more years.

Sincerely,

Andrew Brothers
